In my one of my classes we discussed African spirituality and the concept of blood memory.
Blood memory is defined as “described as our ancestral (genetic) connection to our language, songs, spirituality, and teachings”
It basically means that same things are innately in us, and carried through our blood. That’s why blood is such a powerful symbol. In Christianity we are cleansed by it. In some African cultures, women are sent away when on their periods because of the power blood holds. In Joe Turner’s Come and Gone Loomis can’t begin anew until he bleeds.
I think that’s why some people (myself included) get queasy when they see blood. There’s power in it. There’s an overwhelming amount of life in it.
